Do I Need A Doctor’s Order To Be Admitted?
Yes. A physician must recommend skilled nursing or rehabilitation services before admission. This applies to subacute rehab, long-term skilled nursing, memory care, and certain specialty programs.
Does Medicare Require A Qualifying Hospital Stay?
For Medicare-funded subacute rehabilitation, you typically need:
- A qualifying three-night inpatient hospital stay, and
- Admission to the facility within 30 days of hospital discharge

How Is It Determined Whether I Qualify For Skilled Care Vs. Long-Term Care?
Skilled care is ordered when you need daily clinical or therapy services such as:
- Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy

Long-term care is appropriate when ongoing support is needed with daily living, personal care, or chronic conditions that do not require daily skilled services.
